Training
Paying a master
You do not have to start a skill from nothing. Stand near a master of a trade and say "train": they tell you what they teach. Say "train" and the skill ("train healing") and pay 10 gold a point. A master teaches up to 30.0, never past it; the rest is earned by use.
Smiths teach Blacksmithy, Mining, Mace Fighting, Swordsmanship and Parrying. Guards and weapon masters teach the sword, Tactics, Parrying and Wrestling. Mages teach Magery, Meditation and Resisting Spells; bowyers and rangers Archery, Tactics and Healing; healers Healing and Resisting Spells; fencers Fencing and Tactics.
This is how a Warrior picks up Healing, or a Mage a blade, without a skill screen.
Skill locks
Each skill and each stat can be set to rise, fall or stay locked, in the skills window. Lock what you want to keep, set what you no longer need to fall, and the skill cap of 700.0 is spent where you choose.
Past 70.0 in a fighting skill, the next step is a signature trial.
