- Britain, the Sealed City. A sickness took the old capital. Minoc's soldiers hold a cordon on all five bridges and a Plague Wall across the north road; the North Quarter and the dock houses are burned, the castle grounds are dug into graves, and a pyre burns on the bank plaza. At night the lamps are out; only the pyre and the soldiers' fires light the streets.
- The sealed houses. Eight families are chained in behind red plague cloth. Each needs one thing a day: bread, a healing potion, a letter carried out, or their dead taken to the cart. They remember who helps. A board on the plaza keeps the count: each dawn the sickness spreads from a house left wanting, and seven clean dawns lift the cordon for good.
- Ways out. A bill of health after a night in the pest-house at the castle gate, or the smugglers' boat at night (thy fever goes with thee). The gangs now work the city as gravediggers, smugglers and looters; the ward fights and sashes are gone. The Bounty Wall and Gibbet Row remain.
- Trinsic: the city that fights in a line. The paladins hold a shield wall across the beach before the south gate. Stand beside a shield-mate and each blow on thee is cut by a third, and one in five is turned aside. Every five minutes the Muster sounds and a warband charges the line; hold a gap for 10 gold and 5 more for each orc that falls.
